Weddings: Craig and Renee

We like to celebrate life's special moments, whether weddings, birthdays, or other important events. In our "Celebrations" series we feature customers who choose Lulu Frost for meaningful occasions. This authentic celebration and love story was shared with us by one of our private design customers, Craig & his wife Renee. Their story reads straight out of a movie script beginning with a chance meeting at MoMA on a rainy Sunday afternoon in New York.

Please tell us more about your magical "how we met" story –

“We met on a rainy Sunday afternoon in late-December of 2013 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. While strolling the galleries of a René Magritte retrospective it became apparent that we were interested in the paintings, but we were also wondering if this first encounter could be the beginning of a longer and more loving period for both our lives. That first date lasted 10 hours, and was filled with joy, laughter, art and good beer…all of which turns out to be an excellent recipe for everything that followed.”

And - the proposal?

"Unconventional…we just had a conversation about it." The couple had been talking about going back to Hawaii, this time with Ryan (Craig’s son) and said something along the lines of, “Why don’t we take a long vacation to Hawaii and drop the wedding right in the middle?”  "We both loved the idea and before we realized it, we were officially engaged!"  The engagement ring came later when Craig surprised Renee with a Code Ring from Lulu Frost.

We’d love to know more about the gorgeous custom jewelry pieces you had designed for the 2 of you and your son, what is the meaning behind these pieces and why Lulu Frost?

Craig, “I met Lisa in her studio, when I went to pick up a gift I bought for Renee.  We struck up a lively conversation and after an hour of talking, I asked Lisa if she would consider designing something for the wedding. Thankfully, she said yes!”

"One of the things we both love is the ocean, which was another reason Hawaii seemed perfect. Renee's ring is intended to reflect the colors of the sea, and the irregular shapes of the stones and the design itself are symbolic of sea glass and the way that the ocean brings together beautiful objects in a scattered arrangement. It was a pleasure working with Lisa to design the rings. Her attention to detail and her ability to creatively meet a very emotional project were essential parts of the process."

“We also wanted to do something special for Ryan, to acknowledge our love for him and for how openly he has welcomed our expanding family.  When Ryan was a baby, I frequently read “Guess How Much I Love You” as a bedtime story. I had the most famous line from that book, “I love you to the moon and back,” translated into Hawaiian and inscribed into a cuff designed by the Lulu Frost team.  He was really surprised and knew why that phrase was chosen.”

We love that you both incorporated your own personal style in your outfits. How did you put together your looks for the day?

"Since we were getting married on Kauai, during the summer, the weather dictated some of the options.  Our overall vision was something casually elegant with vintage Hawaiian influences.  Renee selected a beautiful dress made by Johanna Ortiz and her punk pineapple sandals are from Dolce & Gabbana.  Craig’s outfit was a collaborative made-to-measure effort from Stòffa, P. Johnson and Stubbs & Wootton."

What were the details of your wedding and what was your most distinct memory from the celebration?

“We got married last July, on the island of Kauai.  We wanted to do something that felt very personal and intimate, so we intentionally kept things on the small side.  With that said, we were pleasantly surprised when we realized that 30 people were making the journey across the Pacific Ocean to celebrate with us!”

Renee, "There were so many wonderful and memorable moments, it’s hard to pick one.  To start, a traditional Hawaiian wedding is beautiful and memorable all unto itself.  Some other memories include having Craig’s son with us during the ceremony (the BEST wingman), a rare songbird magically appeared and serenaded the family during the portrait session, the heavenly Hawaiian music from the singers and a slack-key guitarist, our friends and family all sharing the spirit of Aloha and Ohana.  It was an amazing day and exceeded all expectations for everyone there."

Any advice for future brides and grooms?

"Make sure that the details reflect you as people and as a couple. It’s typical for a lot of other people in the form of family and friends to have a lot of wonderful suggestions but, in the end, it’s your day and it’s important to make it your version of special. And last, but not least, make sure your photographer is awesome, and the photos are as beautiful as the memories."
