SPOTLIGHT ON: SUCRE

In the midst of Manhattan's quaint West Village neighborhood sits Sucre, a household name in New York's offering of indie boutiques.  Partners with Selima Optique, Sucre carries a wonderful selection of optical frames and sunglasses as well as a wide array of fantastic accessory and clothing brands alike.  A long time carrier of Lulu Frost jewelry, we were excited to catch up with owner Candace Mohr, a native New Yorker with style and personality.  With an exciting trunk show in store for tomorrow, June 20th (see invite below), Candace reminisces on her first encounter with designer Lisa Salzer and the soft spot she holds for the Sucre community.

Tell us about the store experience at Sucre?

“We are one of the few indie stores left on Bleecker Street and are very focused on NYC designers, with a mix of those that are both emerging and well-established.  We have a lot of unique pieces but I try to buy those that will become your favorite, and remain in your wardrobe for years to come.”

Who is the Sucre “customer”?

“The Sucre customer spans all ages and different lifestyles but the common factor is the desire to look different without becoming a fashion victim.  They want to own something wearable but also highly interesting.”

How did you first find out about Lulu Frost jewelry?

“I was one of the first to carry Lisa’s jewelry.  She came to see me years ago with maybe twelve necklaces in tow.  Believe it or not, I own one of those pieces to this day and am still able to wear it!  I’ve really had the privilege of watching the business grow.”

What are customer’s reactions to Lulu Frost?

“People love the jewelry – Lisa’s designs are really one of the draws of the store.  I’m able to style the jewelry in ways that work for everyone.  I can take one of those cut-steel bracelets and pair it with spikes and make it look super edgy or I can take a necklace and style it on someone who wants something classic.  I’ve also noticed how appealing the pieces are to brides, because who doesn’t want something one of a kind on her wedding day?”

What’s the best part about being a storeowner in NYC as well as your favorite thing about the community in the West Village?

“I love NYC and wouldn’t be anywhere else…but the greatest thing about being a store owner is the access to talent.  I believe we have the absolute best designers.  The West Village community is truly beautiful and unlike any other part of Manhattan with its older buildings and winding streets.  It’s just a really great place to be. If you want to entertain yourself this is the best neighborhood to do it.”

Tell us a little bit about the upcoming event and what customers can expect?

“It's a customization event where people will be able to choose from a mix of vintage and non-vintage items and create the jewelry piece of their dreams.  Our Lulu Frost trunk show will kick off a weekend long event on Bleecker street with 10% off all sales from a handful of stores in the area benefiting The Bachmann-Strauss Dystoria & Parkinson Foundation.  Make sure to spread the word!”
